When you drive your Crownline boat over the water on a warm, sunny day, towing a friend on a wakeboard or zipping off to your favorite beach, you’re not thinking about science. But that ride you’re enjoying is born from some of the most cutting-edge science in the boating industry.
Crownline’s patented F.A.S.T. TAB® Hull Design is more than just an attractive look for a boat. It is a unique, innovative approach to hull design that vastly improves control and efficiency, providing boaters with a perfect blend of performance, safety and economy.
With features like the Fin-Assisted Safe Turn (F.A.S.T.) Tabs and vortex generators, this revolutionary hull system incorporates slow-speed stability, high-speed turning stability, improved time-to-plane acceleration, and improved fuel economy. It begins with the vortex generators, a technology used in the aerospace industry. Looking to solve the problem of stern wander on stern-drive boats, Crownline’s engineers included vortex generators on their hulls to precisely control the water flow in the stern of the boat, creating a stable hull at idle speeds.
Crownline’s engineers then used two new design features to improve planing efficiency. They included a full-length keel pad to progressively lift the entire running surface of the hull. They also used a vented chine hull design, which introduces air to the bottom of the boat to help float the stern onto plane, reducing drag and improving fuel economy.
What gives Crownline an advantage over other vented chine hull designs is turning ability. While other vented chine designs compromise turning ability, Crownline engineers overcame that by introducing the F.A.S.T. TAB® hull design. The F.A.S.T. TAB® design increases turning stability by adding increased turning surface just behind the vent. It’s like a small wing that, when placed in the water, helps hold the boat securely in the turn, improving turning stability and safety.
